For a genuine traveler, not your everyday tourist, cliché tourist destinations are all but a commercialisation of a lovely place (..even though I have to admit I enjoy those destinations a lot as well).
If you’re one of the people who feel like travelling is about more than just taking selfies at famous spots, or partying in the Riviera, there are a number of secluded naturally spectacular getaways that will open up a whole new dimension of travel for you. Or maybe combine a bit – nothing wrong with both!
For travelers looking to go away for inspiration, for peace of mind, or simply a chilled beer at a small café in a little village tucked away in the Swiss Alps, look no further; I bet you have no clue these 10 amazing destinations even exist.
1. SVALBARD, NORWAY
Located near the very ends of the earth, between the continental Norway and the North Pole, the Svalbard Norwegian archipelago is the perfect place to view the majestic midnight sun and the stunning Northern Lights.
2. CHAMAREL, MAURITIUS
Take the road less traveled and marvel at the little known Seven Colored Earth at Chamarel, where the multicolored earth was formed by volcanic rock cooling down at various temperatures.
3. VADHOO ISLANDS, MALDIVES
Go here to witness what you’ve only so far seen in movies; yes, we’re talking about the magical sea of stars, created by bioluminescent phytoplankton that twinkle beautifully under the sea.
4. ALBERTA, CANADA
This unusual destination has one awe-striking lake like no other. The Abraham Lake in Alberta, Canada is a mesmerizing clear water lake frozen with odd bubbles near the surface; the bubbles are frozen methane gas.
5. LAKE BAIKAL, RUSSIA
One of the most thrilling sights you’ll ever see is the giant, wonderfully turquoise ice cubes floating around Lake Baikal with a stark landscape offset behind it; you wouldn’t miss this for the world.
6. MYRA, TURKEY
The mystical rock cut tombs of Myra hold many historical secrets. The house of the Virgin Mary, the Hadraian Temple, and the Grand Theatre are not the only tales surrounding these tombs; they are a living tribute to the life and ways of the Lycian people.
7. BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
The war-ravaged countries have gotten back on their feet and yet remain obscure enough to avoid the teeming tourists. Walk, ride or bike around this fairytale land, forget all your troubles, and just come alive in these heavenly locations.
8. LAKE RETBA, SENEGAL
Senegal’s famous pink lake is a delightful new experience. A lake with high salt content and pink color from Dunaliella salina algae, the Lake Retba will also let you float in it much like the famous Dead Sea, except it won’t be as crowded!
9. ELEPHANT FOOT GLACIER, GREENLAND
Don’t let the extreme frozen temperatures and remote location deter you; Greenland is a country home to many spectacular locales, and the Elephant food glacier is one of the many peripheral glaciers that flow independently into the sea; a breathtaking sight located in the northeast of the country.
10. LAPLAND, SCANDINAVIA
Lacking an official political organization, Lapland is home to the Sami people and a sheer winter wonderland as far as the eye can see.
So this time go somewhere less touristy, more travel worthy! Why limit yourself to the usual when you can experience the unusual?
