The hotel: Don Diego (Sardinia)
We stayed here 23/08/2016-25/08/2016 in the Junior Suite.
Don Diego is a luxurious, yet traditional Sardinian hotel, located on the Costa Dorata in northern Sardinia. With stunning views overlooking the bright blue sea and the islands of Tavolara and Molara. The surroundings of the hotel are showered with flowers. It is only a 20 minute drive to the capital city Olbia and it’s airport. There are 52 guest rooms and suites.
As the hotel was originally built in the 1960’s, the rooms have many characteristic features which have been refurbished in 2011. That being said, it does look like it was refurbished in 2011 🙂
Every room has a private entrance and balcony that includes 2 sun-beds. The bathroom was nice but we definitely missed a bathtub.
The views were absolutely breathtaking, we kept mentioning to each other how amazing the look through our window was. Going to sleep and waking up to the sound of waves touching the sand is truly relaxing. After dinner we loved to just sit down and watch the sky, waiting for stars falling. Magical.
Please note that the WiFi is not working in the room. You can consider this as negative , but if you look at it from the bright side; you will completely forget about your everyday life.. There is no other hotel in the area to compare nor compete with hotel Don Diego. We went to have a look around in the area to find something similar, but went running back (seriously). The rooms aren’t super-high quality. It’s not the luxury you would expect in this case looking at the price. But it does all make sense. The location, the look of the suite, the views.
The hotel is situated on the Costa Dorata, a quiet stretch of coastline with many coves and beaches to explore, azure blue waters and great for diving/snorkling!
Just 2 km away you will find Porto san Paolo which has a few local restaurants and shops. But you don’t have to leave the hotel. Because when it comes to food, the hotel doesn’t disappoint. Breakfast is impressive, there is a range of fresh fruits, juices, pastries, ham/salmon, eggs, and cereals to choose from. For lunch and dinner they serve italian dishes like pasta and lasagne, sandwiches, salads, and of course local fish/chicken/meat will be on the menu. I would highly suggest to order the grilled fish of the day and add french fries or grilled vegetables of your choice.
Note: on Sundays they serve a Buffet, make sure to check the menu in advance in case you don’t like what they serve!
The hotel has a private beach, furnished with complimentary parasols and sunbeds and a swimming pool situated right on the waterfront with a seating area and a pool bar to relax and savour the view over the bay. We hired 1 of the 3 gazebos to relax and to enjoy more privacy.
The shallow waters and sand make it perfect for swimming and for children to play. There is also a beauty centre with massages available and fitness room. A tennis court overlooking the beach and sea almost feels like you landed in a video game. There are babysitting facilities and excursions including boat trips, scuba diving, kayaking and windsurfing (extra cost). The reception will kindly help you book a boat trip that matches your purposes. Unfortunately ours got cancelled the day before due to strong wind and waves.
The reception with multilingual staff will help with anything, upon arrival we were early for check-in but could enter the room right away. Anything we asked or needed would be taken care of right away. Allergies/preferences how to have your food cooked? No problem.
If you’re looking for a hotel on the North coast of Sardinia, this is our absolute favourite.
